This weekend, Patty Jenkins’ “Wonder Woman” took in $100.5 million at the US/Canada box office— a record breaking debut for a female director, reports BBC.

“Wonder Woman”, staring Israeli actress Gal Gadot, has received mainly enthusiastic reviews from film critics, even though Hollywood is known to be adverse to hiring female directors, especially for blockbuster superhero movies, says BBC.

According to CNN, more than half of the film’s audience this weekend, 52 percent, were female—a significant turn out for a genre which has been mainly dominated by men.

“Any ridiculous notion that a woman may not be suited to direct a big budget superhero movie is hopefully once and for all shattered,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore.

CNN reports that “Wonder Woman”, which had a production budget of $150 million, gathered a 93 percent score on review site Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore from audiences—one of the best reviewed superhero movies of all time.

“Globally this property has just resonated with fans,” said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros’ distribution chief.”There’s something iconic about… the story of Wonder Woman that’s hitting the zeitgeist perfectly.”

The New York Post describes Wonder Woman as not only having to save humankind, but she also has to rescue the DC cinematic franchise and the reputation of female superhero movies.

Christopher Orr the senior editor and principal film critic at The Atlantic gave the movie a big thumbs up and claims that DC Comics finally got it right.

“Gadot, in particular, is a delight as Diana: supremely capable yet utterly innocent, a big fish who has left her little pond and now finds herself out of water altogether” said Orr. “As her guide to the ways of the masculine world…Pine’s Steve is equal parts incredulous and enraptured toward Diana.

Many, including the Daily Beast, are calling “Wonder Woman” a feminist hero, who enters the “world of men” which is wrought with war and senseless bloodshed. Gal Gadot, a former Miss Israel who served as a combat trainer in the Israeli Army, proved to be the perfect star for the movie, according to The New York Times.

“I’m tired of sincerity being something we have to be afraid of doing,” said Jenkins in an interview with the Times. “I wanted to tell a story about a hero who believes in love, who is filled with love, who believes in change and the betterment of mankind.”
