A Political Fashion Statement at Cannes
The Cannes Film Festival is known as much for the fashion as for the movies, and no one stirred as much controversy as Miri Regev, Israel’s Culture and Sports Minister. Regev’s long skirt depicted a wraparound scene of East Jerusalem, including the Western Wall and Dome of the Rock in the center. Israeli designer Aviad Arik Herman designed the skirt to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Six-Day War in which Israeli forces took control of Jerusalem.
Regev’s fashion choice certainly made a statement, and brought opposing political views to the forefront. While Regev said she “wanted the dress to express in its spirit the beauty of Jerusalem, in honor of the 50th anniversary of its liberation and unification,” the Israeli Minister also received backlash from those proclaiming that Jerusalem belongs to the Palestinians.
Miri Regev’s skirt certainly stirred up more conflict than the movie premiere she wore it to! Social media users even photoshopped images of her fashion choice onto political leaders or changed the scene depicting how they view the Middle East. Whatever your feelings about Regev’s choice on the Cannes red carpet, she certainly showed how fashion can influence art and politics.
First Lady of Fashion
The coat drawing attention around the world is the $51,000 Dolce and Gabbana flowered piece worn by First Lady Melania Trump in Sicily. Mrs. Trump also wore a matching clutch to a lunch held for spouses of the G-7 Summit and the whimsical jacket with the hefty price tag was certainly fit for American royalty.
With colorful 3-D flowers, this couture piece was shown on the runway during Dolce and Gabbana’s fall runway show. Melania has been a big fan of the Italian fashion house, wearing clothes and accessories from the label for her official White House portrait as well as many trips and dinners.
While her previous fashion choices have been a bit more solid and subdued, the fashionable First Lady is definitely putting the fun back into fashion.
Wonder Woman: A Fashionable Phenomenon
Gal Gadot looked like a real life Wonder Woman at her Wonder Woman premiere in a sexy, red Givenchy gown. The 5’10” actress made her big debut in less fancy – but very comfortable footwear, a pair of Aldo Gladiator flats.
The long, sequin dress looked stunning on the star, which featured a high neck and cutouts. The Israeli actress’ fashion choice showed you can be playful and glamorous at the same time – and you can still be a Wonder Woman without heels!
The actress, who bowed down to the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter at the premiere, is proving to be a Fashion Wonder – she also stunned in a custom Prada black embellished gown at the premiere in Mexico.
