The much anticipated affiliation between Winthrop-University Hospital and NYU Langone Health System (NYU Langone) became official on April 1, 2017. NYU Langone is now the corporate parent of Winthrop, creating a clinically integrated healthcare network between our two organizations. With this new affiliation also comes a new name for Winthrop, which will now be known as NYU Winthrop Hospital.

Albertson, Long Island resident, Aaron Pinkhasov, MD, Chairman of the Department of Behavioral Health at NYU Winthrop Hospital, will soon be honored by the United Jewish Appeal (UJA)-Federation of New York, Inc. – the largest local philanthropy in the world. Headquartered in New York City, the organization raises and allocates funds annually to fulfill a mission to “care for people in need, inspire a passion for Jewish life and learning, and strengthen Jewish communities in New York, Israel, and around the world.” Dr. Pinkhasov is one of four healthcare professionals who will be honored at the UJA-Federation of New York’s Long Island Healthcare Professionals South Shore Cocktail Reception, which will be held at Temple B’nai Sholom of Rockville Centre on April 27.

UJA-Federation of NY provides funding to support a network of nearly 100 health, human-service, educational, and community-building agencies and dozens of grantees in New York, Israel, and 70 other countries. In 2016 alone, UJA-Federation raised well over $200 million.

A deeply valued and committed member of the NYU Winthrop team since 2014, Dr. Pinkhasov was born in Dushanbe in the former USSR, where he earned his Medical Degree. He is one of the few graduates of a unique and highly competitive combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry SUNY-Downstate Medical Center Residency Program. After he completed this dual specialty training, Dr. Pinkhasov was selected to become Chief Resident in Internal Medicine, managing nearly 200 residents and closely collaborating with medical leaders from all disciplines at Kings County Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

As one of only a handful of clinicians who are triple board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), Psychosomatic Medicine and American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), Dr. Pinkhasov acquired exceptional insights into the intricate mind-body paradigm and demonstrated superb expertise in areas overlapping between medical and psychiatric health.

Dr. Pinkhasov holds appointments as a Clinical Associate Professor in Medicine and Psychiatry at Stony Brook School of Medicine and SUNY-Downstate Medical Center. He has taught multiple psychiatry courses and clinically trained countless medical and pharmacy students, psychiatry, medicine and pharmacy residents, along with fellows in geriatric medicine and psychiatry.

Prior to joining Winthrop, Dr. Pinkhasov served as the Deputy Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center in Brooklyn from 2001 until 2009, when he was named Chairman of the Psychiatry Department. He also served as the SUNY- Downstate Director and Coordinator for Geriatric Psychiatry Training at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center as well as the Director of Electroconvulsive Therapy training for SUNY-Downstate.

Dr. Pinkhasov was elected a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and is a member of the New York Psychiatric Society, the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine and Association of Medicine and Psychiatry. He is also a member of the Psychosomatic Committee at the Group for Advancement of Psychiatry (GAP) – a national professional organization of psychiatrists who are dedicated to shaping psychiatric thinking, public programs and clinical practice in mental health.

The author of multiple publications and presentations on a range of behavioral health and psychopharmacology topics, Dr. Pinkhasov has received several professional honors, including the President’s Award from the Office of the President, Borough of Brooklyn, and the Pharmacy Master Professor Award from Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. Dr Pinkhasov’s clinical and research interests include complex areas of interface between medical and mental ailments as well as neurocognitive disorders in geriatric population. He was a Primary Investigator of New York State – Office of Mental Health Grant (Phase II), awarded for the Integration of Behavioral Care in Medical Care Settings. Currently, Dr Pinkhasov is actively involved in a national landmark IDEAS-study looking into role of amyloid brain PET-scan in diagnosing of Alzheimer’s Disease and other types of dementia.

Since Dr Pinkhasov assumed leadership within NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Department of Behavioral Health, the Department has developed in leaps and bounds, growing service from 1,200 psychiatry consultations in 2014 to over 7,000 consultations and ambulatory visits in 2016. In close collaboration with other medical and surgical departments,  Dr. Pinkhasov has developed multiple innovative integrated med/psych services, including Diabetes/Mental Health; Wound Care/Mental Health; Bariatric Surgery/Mental Health and most recently, a Women’s Mental Health program.

Dr. Pinkhasov is particularly excited about the Hospital’s recent partnership with NYU Langone, which he believes will open up new horizons for the further development of Behavioral Health Services for both the hospital as well as the community.
