In a court appearance on Monday April 3rd, white supremacist James Harris Jackson showed no remorse, as he smiled contently while being charged with the murder of a black man. The 28-year-old avowed racist is being charged in a Manhattan court for fatally stabbing Tim Caughman, on March 20th. As reported by the NY Post, the crime was racially motivated. Jackson allegedly told police that he traveled to the Big Apple from Baltimore intent on killing black people. According to police, 66-year-old Caughman was stabbed with a 26-inch sword near the corner of Ninth Avenue and West 36th Street at around 11:30 p.m.

According to assistant district attorney Joan Illuzzi-Orbon, the young army veteran spotted his victim stooped over a garbage can, and lunged at him, stabbing him repeatedly. The mortally wounded lifelong New Yorker managed to stumble into the Midtown South Police Precinct, but he died soon after. At his funeral, Caughman was described as a well-liked can-and-bottle recycler, the son of a minister, and an upbeat person with an “enormous heart.” Mayor de Blasio spoke at the funeral saying, “He was attacked for who he was, plain and simple.” Hizzoner continued saying, “It was an attack on New York City.”

Two days after the murder, Jackson turned himself in. “You need to arrest me,” he told the police, as per the criminal complaint. Caughman had discarded his sword but was in possession of two other knives when he was apprehended. While spewing hatred, Jackson told investigators that he was particularly offended by black men who date white women.

On Monday in court, Jackson’s defense lawyer, Sanford Talkin, told the court that he could no longer represent Jackson. Apparently even the defendant’s own parents turned their backs on him, and there was no one to pay for the lawyer. Justice Charles Solomon in Manhattan Supreme Court asked if his family had funds. “Whether they have the funds or not, I’m not sure. But I can say his parents are not going to pay,” the lawyer responded. The judge then asked Jackson whether he could hire a new lawyer. “That’s not possible,” he answered. Judge Solomon said he would assign a new attorney on Wednesday, when Jackson will be arraigned on charges of first-degree murder as an act of terrorism, and other counts.
