The NYPD was on heightened alert in the days preceding the national presidential election.  Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Friday November 4th, that in response to several warnings about possible terrorist activity, the city would be boosting precautions. As reported by the New York Times, The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security warned that the terror group Al Qaeda may have been planning attacks for Monday, in the three states of New York, Texas and Virginia. “We are aware of alleged threats in recent press reports,” said a Homeland Security official. “While we do not comment on intelligence matters, we will say the counterterrorism and homeland security communities remain vigilant and well-postured to defend against attacks here in the United States.”

While the information received was broad, with no specific cities or locations mentioned, and though the credibility of the sources was not established, city officials agreed that it would be better to exercise vigilance. At any rate, there were many high-profile events in NYC that required additional security, including Sunday’s NYC marathon and the election-night gatherings in Manhattan for both Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump. “The simplest way for New Yorkers to understand this is we are going to be in a high state of readiness anyway the next few days,” Mr. de Blasio said on Friday. City officials promised to assign 5,000 police to election duty on Tuesday, a force similar to that in place on New Year’s Eve in Times Square. “We’re in total coordination and consultation with the federal authorities,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, “and we are already on a state of high alert for Election Day — so we have more State Police, more National Guard, more soldiers on duty than ever before.”

While officials in the three listed states prepared precautions, they urged voters not to be intimidated out of voting. “Texans should go about their daily lives as usual, but remain vigilant over the next several days and report any suspicious activity to state or local law enforcement,” said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. “What they really want to do is disrupt the democracy in this country,” said Gov. Cuomo, referring to terror groups. “Election Day, the exercise of that democracy, the high holiday of that democracy, of course is going to present a target for them, and of course we’re going to be ready.”
