A student group at New York University named NYU Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) effectively blamed Israel for the recent highly publicized killings of black men by police in cities around the US

The New York University chapter of Palestinian group Students for Justice in Palestine has accused Israel of complicity in recent shootings of African-Americans by U.S. police.

Following the shootings, the group linked Israel to the incidents on its Facebook page: “We must remember that many US police departments train with the ‪#‎IsraeliDefenseForces. The same forces behind the genocide of black people in America are behind the genocide of Palestinians.”

The following day, the group highlighted its linking of Israel with violence and vitriol in another anti-Semitic rant: “The IDF assists the NYPD and other American police departments in their oppression and murder of black people. These groups share a common logic that manifests in several types of oppression, white supremacist racism among them.”

It was not the first time SJP at NYU blamed Israel for domestic problems in the United States. Last November, during student protests for tuition-free public college, student debt cancellation, and a $15 minimum wage for all campus workers, the SJP sent out a message that the university’s “Zionist administration” was to blame for high tuition costs.

The CUNY Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs condemned the SJP’s statement as being “thinly veiled anti-Semitism”.

As for SPJ’s claims of black and Palestinian “genocide,” Tablet Magazine noted the absurdity of the claims since “the population of Palestinians in Israel has grown exponentially since the creation of the Jewish State. Similarly, despite the SJP claims, the black population in America has also continued to rise.”

SJP later admitted that Israel did not “literally kill” the two black men but continued to accuse both Israel and the American police of “white supremacist racism.”

Students for Justice in Palestine has chapters on college campuses across the U.S., and is known for its aggressive tactics and attempts to intimidate Jewish students. It was founded by the anti-Israel activist and UC Berkeley professor Hatem Bazian.
