Remembering the Farhud

Dear Editor,

In 1941, Shavuot fell exactly as in this year, its eve was on Saturday. After we came back from the synagogue and after Shavuot Kiddush and dinner, we began hearing shots, screams of help seeking and broken glass of shops and windows of Jewish people. It was the pronazi pogrom, called farhood in Arabic. The carnage went on all night and the first day of Shavuot, until Kurdish troops loyal to the king came to Baghdad and stopped the carnage and maintained order. Over 900 Jews were killed, among them was my cousin, and another thousand injured, men, women and children. It was one of the main reasons for the 2400-year Jewish community of Iraq, to fold and move in mas to Israel, having all their assets and property confiscated by the western oriented Iraqi government. Its scars still affect the Iraqi Jews living in Israel and elsewhere. A mass grave of the dead was destroyed and flattened by Saddam Husein.

Sincerely,

Professor Heskel M. Haddad, MD

ADL Supporting “Black Lives Matter”

Dear Editor:

The ADL, under the leadership of  Soros and Obama trained Jonathan Greenblatt, will now be focusing a major portion of their day to day work on shoring up the likes of Black Lives Matter and the LBGTQ crowd with your money. We’ve always wondered why the NAACP is always demanding that Jews fight for blacks (As we’ve always done) but never has there been reciprocity from the black community to stand up for Israel, to condemn the Jew hatred from the likes of Sharpton, Farrakhan, Wright and Jesse, all of the black persuasion.

In fact, they and their leadership have always sided with the haters of Israel and Jewry over the years. If you recall, we were the evil landlords, biased shop owners, employers, bigoted union leaders, elite students who took away seats at prestigious NYC high schools and although relatively new to this land in which blacks have been living for over 400 years, we have been successful and prosperous. Not only that, but because of judicial prejudicial racism our kids are not locked up in prisons at the same proportion they are.

To the black community, nothing we’ve ever done for them out of the goodness of our hearts has been enough. Greenblatt, the ADL and your funds will now go to remedy that problem. It’s time to wake up to the flim-flam of the ADL and close up your checkbooks to them. CAMERA, the ZOA and AFSI are the winners when it comes to propping up support for world Jewry, Israel and democracy. Fund and support them.

Calling for Fairness at UWS Synagogue

(The Jewish Voice received the following letter addressed to Rabbi Robinson of the Lincoln Square Synagogue in Manhattan from the campaign of Oliver Rosenberg for Congress)

Rabbi Robinson:

It has come to our attention that one of the candidates in a crucial election has been invited to appear at the Lincoln Square Synagogue’s annual dinner.  That candidate is Jerrold Nadler.  The fact that Mr. Nadler is a sitting congressman does not change the fact that he is a candidate in an imminent election.

Nor does it change the fact that the LSS is providing valuable support to one candidate’s campaign while depriving the other candidate in the race, Oliver Rosenberg, of the opportunity to greet the congregation.

Mr. Rosenberg’s team has previously approached LSS on other occasions only to be rebuffed with the excuse that the LSS is “apolitical.” The latest turn of events undercuts that assertion.

I am writing to formally request – yet again – an opportunity for Mr. Oliver Rosenberg to meet and greet the congregation.

The way this incident with LSS and Mr. Nadler has unfolded – without notification or an invitation to Mr. Rosenberg  – leaves the distinct impression it was done deliberately to blindside Mr. Rosenberg, favor one candidate over another and prevent the congregation from knowing they have a choice in the upcoming election.

In short, there is a strong appearance that LSS is using its status as a tax-exempt non-profit institution to assist a political campaign. This would be a breach of the law and IRS regulations. We are confident that without the provision of equal time to Mr. Rosenberg, the fig leaf declaration that this is a “non-political” event will not stand up to legal scrutiny.

An invitation offering Mr. Rosenberg equal opportunity to speak at the dinner would be welcome, even at this late moment mere hours before Shabbat.

Sincerely,

Curtis Ellis

Communications Director

Oliver Rosenberg for Congress

Get Involved in Local Politics

Dear Editor:

Allow me to say that I am most impressed by your coverage of events and news in the greater New York City metropolitan area. As Jews who care about the city we live in, I strongly believe that each of us needs to take a greater part in it. The quality of life we enjoy in the Big Apple, will be dependent on our efforts to make it the greatest city in the world. As such, I will like to suggest that each of us begin by attending our local district meetings and public hearings so that we may have our voices heard. This will afford us with the opportunity to initiate new ideas, to push back on projects that will negatively impact our communities and to have a profound effect on our local elected officials. In this political season that has been marked by surreal chaos and acrimony, I think we can all learn a tremendous lesson. If we don’t like the candidates being offered up, we must create our own.

I think we owe it to our next generation to take a stand now and not allow the jackals to overwhelm us.

Sincerely

Estelle Grozinsky
