The Jewish Voice extends our full throated plaudits to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo for giving his imprimatur to an executive order against the nefarious agenda of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. As he spoke about this important measure he said, “It’s very simple. If you boycott against Israel, New York will boycott you … If you divert revenues from Israel, New York will divert revenues from you. If you sanction Israel, New York will sanction you. Period … As a Democrat, I always took for granted that there was a natural relationship with Israel that was unquestionable … You now have aspects of the Democratic Party that are being critical of Israel as being disproportionate in its response”
While on the surface the last part of the Governor’s remarks about the position of the Democratic party appears to a be a clear swipe at Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, it should still give us pause.
After all it was and still is, in great measure, the party to which the vast majority of American Jews have pledged their fealty. From the FDR era to this juncture in time, American Jews have not only generously funded the party machine but have pounded the pavement for it, volunteered countless hours for it and essentially dedicated their lives to it in a multitude of ways.
While Jews tend to cleave to socially liberal ideas that are propounded by the party, these same Jews still have an ingrained loyalty to the sovereign State of Israel. For Jews, it is the one and only Jewish state. However beleaguered it may appear to be, however many enemies line up to denigrate her, the Jewish State remains a paradigm of pride to her people as well as an emotional bulwark against the pernicious forces in the world who seek her destruction.
The time is long overdue for Jews to re-assess their relationship to the Democratic party or to assiduously labor to amend its policies.
Thank you, Governor Cuomo for standing up for the truth; for pushing back against the incessant tide of animus that spews from the collective mouth of the BDS movement.
