Cops haul away Dr. Rachel Wellner, who allegedly struck a police officer with her car after he issued her a ticket

On Friday, New York City prosecutors said that a cancer surgeon from a Bronx hospital had boasted about her job saving lives but then hit an NYPD office with her car in Midtown.

The “double standard” doc in question was Dr. Rachel Wellner, 40, a breast cancer specialist at Montefiore Medical Center in The Bronx.

Dr. Wellner was charged with hitting an officer’s leg with her Volvo on West 55th Street and Eighth Avenue in order to circumvent the inevitably of her receiving a ticket. Prosecutors said at her arraignment that her hubris was quite striking. They quoted her as allegedly saying: “I am a doctor. I have patients who are dying. I’m the hero; the cops are not!” She also was reported to have said: “I don’t accept a summons. The police assaulted me.”

Sources in the police department said that Wellner was released with no bail amount. The charges against her include resisting arrest and leaving the scene of an accident.

The police source also said that the doctor was saying, ‘I don’t have time for this. I have to get to the hospital.”’

The source said that the doctor remained adamant and refused to listen to reason when officers were discussing the summones to her. They said she would not even countenance their line of thinking. She got back into her car as Officer Niguel Vega was attempting to handcuff her. She then allegedly sped off having hit the officer in the leg.

When arrested by police, Dr. Wellner was clad in her green medical scrubs. At this juncture she began crying profusely and became increasingly more agitated about being handcuffed. The police source said her complaints were punctuated by medical jargon. The source said that the doctor used the high brow medical terms in order to show those around her that she was in some way superior. That kind of attitude did nto work well with police who told her to “sit down and shut up.”

For her part, Dr. Wellner asserts that the cops manhandled her. “Help, the police are assaulting me!” she allegedly yelled when she was stopped by the cops at around 11 a.m.

A police source told the NY Post that Officer Vega tried to handcuff the doctor, but she flailed her arms and jumped up and down on her car while screaming and cursing. Before taking off in her vehicle while she was in this hostile state of mind, Dr. Wellman kicked at the officers and even left the car door open as she left in haste.

She was arrested only moments later on West 53rd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. When she appeared in Manhattan Criminal Court on Friday, the doctor looked emotionally distraught.

,Alan Futerfas, Wellner’s attorney declined to comment outside the courthouse.

Witnesses at the scene did not give an iota of credibility to Wellner’s assertions that the police behaved in a menacing way to her.

George Williams, 50, a witness at the scene who is from The Bronx, said: “All the cops were doing is giving her a ticket. And she’s yelling, ‘Help me, please! God, help me! I’m being harassed.’ And she was not being harassed.”
