Civil Court Judge Noach Dear has been nominated to become Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, 2nd Judicial District.

Civil Court Judge Noach Dear has been nominated to become Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, 2nd Judicial District. On Monday night, September 21, he received the endorsement for his nomination in a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Democratic Party of Brooklyn. Then on Thursday night, September 24, Brooklyn Democrats voted to make Dear a candidate for the higher state Supreme Court.

For three decades Dear was a political figure in Brooklyn’s Borough Park, where he has gained the backing of the Orthodox Jewish community. In 2008, Dear was first elected to the bench as a judge in the Civil Court of Kings County, and then in 2010, he was appointed Acting Justice in the Supreme Court of Kings County.

Dear’s term would run through 2030 as a Supreme Court justice, and he would handle bigger criminal or civil cases as well as rake in $167,700.

Reformers blew off Dear’s promotion, while other Democrats outwardly opposed it.

According to county political leaders, “Dear is fit to wear the robes.”

Brooklyn Democratic Party attorney Frank Carone said, “He was recommended by the vast, vast majority and he has done a really decent job.”

“Noach pretty much had the votes no matter what,” said Democratic District Leader Josh Skaller. “We might not have gotten Debra without the package. It was pretty much a calculation.”

Assemblyman Dov Hikind congratulated Dear on his promotion, and said, “I am thrilled to congratulate Noach Dear on his nomination to Supreme Court Justice in Kings County. I have known Noach for decades and he is a long-time friend. He is a devoted public servant and a tireless community advocate, from his time as District Manager for Brooklyn Community Board #12 to his service in public office as a member of the New York City Council. For the past few years, Noach has been a highly respected judge in the lower court, gaining a well-deserved reputation for protecting consumer rights. The New York Times, in an editorial in 2012, hailed Noach’s courtroom as one that has helped restore due process to hundreds of consumers too poor or intimidated to seek justice. Noach Dear has distinguished himself with his no-nonsense approach. I was proud to endorse him when he first ran for judge and tonight as well. His nomination is a victory for our community and all New Yorkers. I extend a hearty mazal tov to Noach and his family and wish him continued success in enhancing our system of justice for all New Yorkers, especially the little guy.”
