Former New York mayor, billionaire Michael Bloomberg has bought another home in London for $26.5 million.

The baroque-style mansion is located in the Chelsea neighborhood along the Cheyne Walk overlooking the River Thames. Bloomberg acquired the property by paying an extra $1.6 million beyond the asking price, leaving the many other bids in the dust.

Dating back to 1715, the novelist Mary Ann Evans, better known as George Eliot, called this mansion home. The listing brokerage for the property is Strutt & Parker.

The finance tycoon already owns a Knightsbridge mansion in the ritzy Cadogan Suqare area, with four bedrooms and three baths, so the historic Chelsea property would be his second home in the UK capital.

According to the Daily News, “His new home has seven bedrooms, a private entry road, a garden, several vaults and a massive ceiling mural by James Thornhill, the designer of the paintings on the inside of the dome at St. Paul’s Cathedral.”

Rumors have been circulating that Bloomberg plans to run as Conservative Party candidate for mayor of London, which this new hefty purchase may support. Next year the term ends for the current mayor, Boris Johnson, who is supportive of the wealthy American politician.

Earlier this year Johnson wrote to Bloomberg, “Mike, old friend, this is the big one. I had hoped that you would run for President, but you have mystifyingly decided to let that chance pass. There is therefore only one way to excel your epic 12-year career at the helm in Manhattan … and that is to become the leader of a city that has regained its status as the greatest on Earth.”

In April, Bloomberg was named an honorary knight, and British conservatives have suggested he become a citizen, which would be necessary if he were to actually run for mayor there.

However, the 73-year-olf former mayor has previously denied the candidacy gossip, saying he had “zero interest” in running.
