Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury) spearheaded the letter

On Monday, July 6, forty Assembly Members from the State of New York sent a letter to NY’s congressional delegation regarding the forthcoming Iran nuclear deal.

The letter, spearheaded by Assemblyman James Skoufis (D-Woodbury), urges the House Representatives to make sure 4 major components are implemented in the deal as they formulate their position on the matter, in advance of congressional review of the deal.

The Assembly members outline 4 measures that should be included in any deal: The continuation of sanctions until benchmarks have been met and verified; the ability for international inspectors to ensure compliance, anytime and anywhere, without obstruction; snapback measures should Iran fail to comply, and a full understanding and acknowledgment by Iran of the deal’s provisions.

“We know that you share our belief that the benefits of any deal must outweigh the difficult concessions we will be asked to make. In addition, we hope that you will continue to bear in mind the very real concerns of the State of Israel, our only true ally in the Middle East,” the NY lawmakers write. “Any deal that presents an opportunity for Iran to develop nuclear weapons – either within the agreement or by skirting the agreement – is ill-conceived and dangerous to Israel and United States interests in the Middle East.”

“As Members of Congress, you will be able to review the forthcoming agreement. As such, we trust that you will ensure the strongest possible deal that both protects our ally and offers stability to the region,” they conclude.

Members undersigned include former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, many of the Jewish lawmakers, as well as Brooklyn Assemblymembers representing large Jewish constituents – Rodneyse Bichotte, Ellen Jaffee, Walter Mosley, Erik Dilan and Felix Ortiz.

Assemblyman Dov Hikind, a hawk who represents the largest Jewish district in the state, did not sign the letter. Hikind was not immediately available to comment.

It was previously reported that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is preparing to publicly split with the president if Obama reaches a nuclear deal with Iran that is opposed by Israeli leaders.
