A border policeman has been left seriously wounded after being stabbed by an Arab terrorist in Jerusalem, close to the Old City’s Damascus Gate on Sunday morning, June 21.

INN has reported that security forces and paramedics are already at the scene.

The victim, aged 20, is in critical condition and fighting for his life, with stab wounds to his neck. Paramedics performed emergency first aid at the scene, and then transferred him to Jerusalem’s Shaare Tzedek hospital for further treatment.

As of late Sunday morning, a slight improvement in the victim’s medical condition was reported. According to the Director of the Trauma Unit at Shaare Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem, Dr. Ofer Merin, the wounded police officer has emerged from the operating room. However, his condition is still serious, as was reported by INN. Border Police Commander Major General Amos Yaakov arrived at Shaare Tzedek Hospital and visited the wounded officer, according to the report.

Yaakov praised the officer’s quick action. “A fast, professional and resolute response ended the event, before the terrorist could continue to carry out his plans,” he said. “With extraordinary courage, despite the serious injury, he strove for contact and neutralized the terrorist. Border Police fighters prove time after time that they deserve the nickname – ‘the country’s bulletproof vest.’”

According to the INN report, Magen David Adom paramedic Aharon Adler was one of the first to arrive at the scene on Sunday morning.

“I arrived at the scene and saw two people lying on the ground,” Adler said. “One, I was told by the security forces in the area, was the terrorist, and next to him was a young man of about twenty with several stab wounds in the upper body. We approached and I and number of other paramedics that arrived began to give him emergency treatment. After a very short amount of time, “an Intensive CareUnit from MDA arrived and together with them, we continued treatment before evacuating him to Shaare Tzedek,” he said.

The terrorist was transferred to Hadassah hospital in critical condition. He has been identified as an 18-year-old resident of Judea and Samaria.

Initial estimates point to “nationalistic motivations” – i.e. a terror attack – but it is unknown whether the terrorist was a “lone wolf” or acting on behalf of an organization.

Jerusalem District Commander Moshe Edri issued a statement saying, “We’ll assess the situation in light of all possible scenarios. Police details to the area will be reinforced as needed. Any incident where police officers or civilians are injured should end in the assassination of the terrorist.”

The stabbing marks the latest in a spate of attacks against Jews throughout Israel. On Friday, two Israeli hikers were shot by an Arab terrorist near the town of Dolev in the Binyamin region north of Jerusalem. 25-year-old Danny Gonen of Lod, Israel died of his wounds shortly after the attack.

According to a report in Ha’Aretz, on Saturday, stones were thrown at a bus and a private vehicle, lightly injuring the driver. A 16-year-old Palestinian was later detained in relation to the incident.

Later Saturday night, a firebomb was thrown at the Beit Hanina-Neve Yaakov junction. However, the bottle missed and no one was injured.

Avigdor Lieberman of the Israel Beytenu party said that today’s attack, combined with the recently renewed rocket fire from Gaza and Friday’s shooting, are the result of the Palestinian Authority’s incitement combined with the “weakness exuded by the Israeli government.”
