City Councilman Vincent Gentile of Brooklyn is the Democratic candidate for the congressional seat of former-Representative Michael Grimm.

On Sunday, March 1, the Democratic candidate for the congressional seat of former-Representative Michael Grimm spoke boldly about his campaign, which will focus on the Eric Garner case, during an appearance on John Catsimatidis’ AM 970 radio show.

City Councilman Vincent Gentile of Brooklyn emphasized his intentions to attack his Republican opponent, Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan, for his poor management of the grand jury that decided not to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo, whose chokehold was ruled as Garner’s cause of death.

“The Eric Garner case . . . reflects on how the district attorney would act as a Congress member,” Gentile said. “After the decision of the grand jury, it was incumbent on Dan Donovan to come before the people of Staten Island and . . . speak about the process . . . He did none of that . . . When chaos broke out on the streets of Staten Island and elsewhere, Dan Donovan was nowhere to be seen . . . That’s not the kind of leadership you want to send somebody down to Washington to display.”

In response, Donovan’s campaign said that legally the district attorney cannot discuss the content of his court petitions.

Jessica Proud, a spokeswoman for Donovan’s campaign, said, “For someone seeking the job of lawmaker, [Gentile] shows an embarrassing lack of understanding of the law.”

For over three decades, Republicans have maintained a hold on the seat that represents Staten Island as well as a small part of South Brooklyn. 31 out of the last 33 years the party’s members have kept this position.

In December former-representative Grimm pled guilty to a charge of felony tax evasion for a restaurant that he co-owned. Despite the fact that the crime occurred in 2010 before he ran for office, Grimm resigned from his government position in January.
