The Parachute Jump, Brooklyn’s Eiffel Tower, was built for the 1939 New York World’s Fair, in Flushing, and was moved to its Coney Island in 1941.

The famous Brooklyn neighborhood blows the socks off Times Square this December 31, with a celebration that is sure to delight even the most Manhattan happy tourist or local. “Why be squished like a sardine in Times Square when you can rejoice like royalty in the County of Kings,” exclaims an exuberant Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President.

“We’re no longer living in the shadow of Manhattan,” Adams has stated. “We have our own identity.” A towering icon of that identity is the Parachute Jump, which dominates the Coney Island skyline and will be the site for the LED ball drop on New Year’s Eve. The first annual event will feature a DJ, and Coney Island Sideshow performers will be breathing and spitting fire. It also kicks off what promises to be a great year for Coney Island and Brooklyn. “The alliance for Coney Island is proud to work with… Eric Adams and Council Member Mark Treyger on a spectacular new addition to Coney Island’s year–round programming,” said Johanna Zaki, executive director for the Alliance for Coney Island.

Adding to a calendar that includes a New Year’s Polar Bear Plunge, this festival features more than 8,000 LED lights for the ball drop, unobstructed views of the fireworks, and even some giveaways. Come out to Coney Island for New Year’s Eve, and you may even snag a free hot chocolate.

“With fireworks in Coney Island and at Grand Army Plaza,” says Adams, “the best parties for ringing in 2015 will be in the hippest and most colorful borough around.”

The Coney Island kick off to the year is supported by the FDNY, Department of Parks and Recreation, NYPD, Department of Sanitation, Assembly Member Brook-Krasny, Community Board 13, NYPD PSA 1, Central Amusement International, ConEdison, Coney Island Beautification Project, Coney Island Generation gap, Ed Cosme, Friends of Kaiser Park, Garden State Fireworks, Inc., Heritage Equity Partners, Investors Bank, Maimonides Medical Center, Peggy O’Neil’s, Rooftop Films, South Brooklyn Youth Consortium, and Tom’s Coney Island.
