Why did members of Activists 4 Israel, and Americans for a Safe Israel spend a cold winter rainy Sunday protesting at the United Nations in New York City? Because they must! On December 28, they gathered to protest recent actions by the European Union and the United Nations regarding Israel. The group of about forty protestors, holding signs, waving flags, and chanting slogans, accused both international organizations of ramping up the anti-Israel rhetoric in an ongoing bid to appease Israel’s detractors. A non binding UN vote recognizing a Palestinian State, which is expected to take place in 2015, would place far greater pressure upon Israel to make concessions demanded by the Palestinians and their supporters.

Recently, the EU Court had removed Hamas from its list of terror organizations. This decision has shocked many who view this gesture as another concession to the growth of radical Islam in Europe.

In an example of what protesters cited as an obvious anti-Israel bias, was statement by High Representative Federica Mogherini offering condolences on the death of Palestinian Minister Abu Ein. Ain was a convicted terrorist who in 1979 planted the explosives in the city of Tiberias, which left two teenagers dead and dozens injured, during a Lag BaOmer holiday celebration. The statement claimed that excessive force was used by Israeli forces during the protest where Ein died of a heart attack was rejected as totally false.

This week, the EU Parliament rejected the suggestion of creating an anti-Semitism task force in response to the sky rocketing levels of anti-Semitism in Europe. In response, Poland’s chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich stated that the decision not to form a task force, “shows a politicization of fighting anti-Semitism to an unprecedented level of cynicism.”

Also implicated in the recent activity at the UN and EU, was Secretary of State Jon Kerry, who reportedly advised the parties to wait on voting until after the Israeli elections in March. “Ridiculous!” scoffed one protestor, “If Kerry were a strong leader, he would have said that after decades of slamming Israel, the UN has no credibility on such matters related to Israel’s safety.”

According to protest organizer Maya Friedman, The UN and EU are “rewarding Hamas by removing them from the terrorist list and voting for possibly establishing another Islamic terror state ‘Palestine’ – while condemning Israel numerous times with violations of human rights? That is not acceptable. “

According to protest co-organizer, Karen LichtBraun, Israel is falsely singled out at the expense of persecuted minorities in the Middle East, “While both the EU and the UN are busy unjustifiably condemning Israel, terrorist groups are murdering thousands of Yezidis, Christians and “non-compliant” Muslims. These acts continue and we do not hear much condemnation from the EU or the UN. Israel is the only democratic country in the Middle East that seems to be their main target.”

Israel activist Jeremy Dery stated that any concessions to the terrorists “will only create more terrorism in an already volatile region with rockets, tunnels, and terrorist attacks aimed at Israel once the Hamas takes over the West Bank. Israel must expose the lies and hatred being taught by the Palestinian Leadership in their school systems and mosques. They constantly incite against Israel and Jews while trying to erase any Jewish historical presence in historical Israel.”

Dery had attended the event to “join the voices defending Israel during these challenging times.”
