US Journalist with Israeli Roots Killed by Islamic State

The American journalist Steven Sotloff’s beheading was confirmed on Tuesday night, September 2, in a video released by the Islamic State (IS) terrorists in Syria. Sotloff’s roots in Israel began in Herzliya, where he was an optimistic government student at the Interdisciplinary Center. The Foreign Ministry allowed for the fact that he was a citizen of Israel to be publicized on Wednesday afternoon, September 3.

Sotloff, a Jewish Miami native, went to Israel in 2008 to obtain his undergraduate at the IDC. His classmates had only positive words about Sotloff, describing him as having a special energy about him, a big personality and being “an excellent journalist.”

He traveled throughout the Middle East as a freelance journalist; recording peoples’ uprisings and the downfalls of dictatorships. His work eventually landed him in Syria, which is where he went missing on August 4, 2013.

His family chose to keep the kidnapping quiet, and push for his release privately. It was only after the vicious video of James Foley’s beheading by IS was publicized on August 19 that the captivity of Sotloff by IS was released to the media.

Apparently, Sotloff was held for almost a year in Raqqa after being captured by IS in Aleppo. Sotloff was shown with a shaved head, in the video, donning the same orange jumpsuit as Foley wore for his decapitation.

The IS terrorist announced that Sotloff would be killed next, and gave US President Obama 24 hours to respond to the threat. Obama made a public statement condemning the murder and kidnapping, saying that “the entire world is appalled” by the brutal actions of the IS terror group.
