It is clear that a long-term solution to safeguard future generations of Israelis is absolutely necessary in order for this operation to be “the last of its kind.” Calling for the Prime Minister Netanyahu to order a ground offensive in the hornet’s nest known as Gaza takes a tenacious courage, but one that is indispensable. In these times of war, Israel needs a redoubtable figure who will not acquiesce to the mounting international pressure against the Jewish state’s right to self-defense.
While many Israelis object to a ground offensive because of the devastating effects of military casualities and the emotional trauma of being labeled as the world’s “bogeyman” in the event that Palestinian civilians are killed in Gaza, little can be done to prevent it at this juncture in time.
Hamas has evolved in to an isolated entity with very little or no support from the Muslim world (with the exception of Iran who is still sending them rockets and missiles). Because this fortuitous scenario has unfolded, now is the perfect time for Israel to finish the job. Israel can ill afford another spate for incessant rocket attacks in the weeks, months and years to come.
A ground offensive would give Israel the ability to eliminate the remaining smuggling tunnels for Hamas weaponry; to eradicate terrorist training sites and facilities; to destroy venues used as rocket launching pads and to mete out justice to Hamas leaders and operatives in Gaza.
As the infinite litany of Israel’s detractors join forces to delegitimize the defensive measures that the Jewish state has taken, we can only come to the obvious conclusion that “we’ve heard this all before.” The enemies roll out their bald faced lies as their well oiled propaganda machines are operating at full force. Of course, the mainstream media has not let us down. Their coverage of the war in Gaza is practically synonymous with that of Al Jazeera.
The time is long overdue to tune out world opinion; to squelch the volume on the “broken record” regarding a ceasefire that is being spewed forth by Washington and above all to shut out the guilt trips of our own collective consciences.
A ground offensive is the order of the day for Israel’s survival.
