In the NBA Draft on Thursday June 26th, Andrew Wiggins of Kansas received the number 1 pick of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

It was a great night for Canada and Kansas, when Cleveland opened the NBA draft north of the boarder last Thursday.  This is the second year in row, and hopefully Wiggins will prove a better choice than Anthony Bennett has thus far. After incurring an injury last summer, Bennett started the season out of shape and played a mediocre season; hence why the Cavaliers are back in the same spot again.

Wiggins glowed in his black tuxedo jacket with a white floral pattern as he was honored with the number one pick. Followed close behind, he was glad to see Joel Embid, Jayhawks teammate, selected.

“A thousand thoughts are going through my head right now,” Wiggins said. “It’s a dream come true.”

As a Kansas freshman, Wiggin made a record averaging 17.1 points per game. He should be much more productive than the Caveliers’ pick last year, Embiid, who suffered a stress fracture in his right foot shortly before the draft.

With Wiggins’ draft, Canada is now the only country besides the U.S. to have multiple consecutive number 1 picks.  Commissioner Adam Silver called the first round of draft picks for the first time since replacing David Stern. Wiggins donned a maroon Cleveland hat, and hugged his supporters as he climb to the stage to shake hands with Silver after the draft.

Philadelphia selected Embiid third; he drew loud cheers from the many red-and-blue dressed 76ers fans that made the trip to Barclays Center in Brooklyn, along with last season’s rookie of the year Michael Carter-Williams from Philadelphia guard, who sat on the arena floor level.

The top two teams passed on Embiid, because of his foot injury that leaves his NBA debut uncertain after surgery.  The 76ers figured they could afford to take a chance on Embiid, having had two top-10 picks.

Wiggins commented on Embiid saying, “He worked so hard. He didn’t let nothing get to him. He always stayed motivated. So I’m just proud. It’s a proud moment for Kansas.”
