(Photo Credit: Dan Miller/DMD Images)On Monday June 9, Mayor Bill de Blasio visited FDNY headquarter in downtown Brooklyn. The Mayor dispensed the oath of office to Daniel A. Nigro, the 33rd Fire Commissioner of the City of New York. The Benediction was offered by Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, the first Vice President of the Jewish ‎Board of Rabbis, and a chaplain with the FDNY.

Following the Benediction, Rabbi Potasnick presented both mayor de Blasio and Commissioner Daniel Nigro with New York Rangers Yakamas. This was in celebration of both the new Commissioner taking the oath of office and the NY Rangers berth in the finals of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Commissioner Nigro, who lives in Whitestone Queens with his wife Lynn, fought his way up through the ranks. He is only the second Fire Commissioner to hold every rank in the Department from Firefighter to Fire Commissioner. The new‎ Commissioner started his FDNY career as a firefighter on November 29, 1969.

He oversaw all rescue and recovery operations at the World Trade Center site in the wake of the September 11 attack.  Following 9/11 he was appointed to Chief of the Department, a position that made him the highest ranking uniformed member of the Department. Nigro became responsible for all major uniformed FDNY Bureaus: Operation, Training, EMS, Communications and Fire Prevention.

“Dan is the kind of guy we need in the FDNY,” said Mayor De Blasio‎ just before swearing in the 33rd Fire Commissioner of NYC.

The mayor added, “He lived the tradition and now he will add to it,” referring to Daniel Nigro’s superb and dedicated service to the City of New York and the FDNY.

The Mayor was all smiles when he introduced the new Commissioner’s father, a retired captain of the FDNY who served the city following service to our nation during WWII.

Commissioner Nigro gave homage to his predecessor by saying, “I plan to continue the work of Sal Cassano (former fire commissioner).”
