As we report the coverage of the historic first visit to Israel by a Canadian Prime Minister, namely Stephen Harper, one cannot help but to take pause and consider the global ramifications of his visit.

Unlike other world leaders who visit Israel, and in a “gesture” of even handedness feel no compunction about chastising Israel over the issue of settlements being an “obstacle to peace” in the Middle East, Mr. Harper took a strikingly different tone. Rather than deliver a jeremiad over the exaggerated myth of the “poor, oppressed” Palestinians, Mr. Harper saw things as they are, and remaining loyal to the veracity of the situation, refused to excoriate Israel publicly.

Expressing frustration at the media’s double standard when it pertains to portraying Israel as the intransigent entity in the peace process as well as the perennial “oppressor” and “bogeyman” in the Middle East, Harper said with pronounced exasperation: “I’m not here to single out Israel for criticism.” According to Canadian news sources, Harper complained that when he appeared at a news conference the previous day — where Canadian journalists were limited to two questions — he was asked about the Israeli settlements but no one asked him to criticize the Palestinian Authority over issues of governance or human rights.

“When I’m in Israel I’m asked to single out Israel. When I’m in the Palestinian Authority I’m asked to single out Israel. And in half the other places around the world you ask me to single out Israel,” Harper said.

For that representation of moral rectitude and intestinal fortitude, we can only extend the grandest of plaudits to Mr. Harper for his exemplary courage in the “line of fire” launched the blatantly anti-Israel posture of the “fourth estate”

For once, a leader has arisen from the nations who truly comprehends the devolution of venalities and mendacity that defines the Arab propaganda machine. For it is they who have been spewing forth spurious assertions and claims against Israel for decades, but now, a genuine seeker of wisdom and truth has called them on it.

It is valuable to take note of the fact that during Mr. Harper’s address before the Knesset, he was loudly heckled by Arab MK Ahmed Tibi as the Canadian Prime Minister warned that a dangerous new form of anti-Semitism has emerged and said the international community has a moral and strategic objective to rally around Israel as a haven for Jews.

Tibi began shouting that Israel was an “apartheid state.” He then walked out of the plenum. Tibi had previously called on Canadians to boycott companies and products linked to Israeli towns built in the West Bank.

Harper made it clear why his government has formulated a pro-Israel policy in an address that covered a number of topics and was bluntly worded,

“Those who often begin by hating the Jews, history shows us, end up hating anyone who is not them,” said Harper.

For anyone with eyes to see and ears that hear, it is more than obvious that Mr. Harper saw through the sheer hypocrisy of Tibi’s tirade. The moment that Mr. Harper made it abundantly clear that the egregious and hate fueled concept of anti-Zionism is tantamount to repackaged vociferous anti-Semitism did the Arab purveyor of falsehood stand up and shout.

There is little doubt that Mr. Harper’s comments pushed Tibi’s buttons to the max as the proverbial genie was let out of the bottle and the truth was not only acknowledged and recognized but was articulated in a bold and self-assured manner by a man who has earned the respect of the world.

On matters pertaining to the escalating Iranian nuclear arms program, once again, Mr. Harper rose to the occasion and separated the wheat from the chaff. His remarks cast doubt on the efficacy of the US and other countries easing economic sanctions on Iran in a plan that was laid out in Geneva. Understanding the importance of implementing crippling sanctions on Iran to dissuade them from their diabolical plans to wipe Israel off the map and the entire Western world while they are at it, Mr. Harper noted that Ottawa’s sanctions on Iran would remain “fully in place” as an interim nuclear deal between world powers and Tehran took effect.

“We truly hope that it is possible to walk the Iranian government back from taking the irreversible step of manufacturing nuclear weapons,” Harper stated to the Knesset. “But for now, Canada’s own sanctions will remain fully in place.  “Should our hopes not be realized, should the present agreement prove ephemeral, Canada will be a strong voice in the world for renewed sanctions,” he added.

We must admit, that kind of promise is more than Israel got from the United States.  The Jewish Voice concurs with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. Mr. Harper is a “great friend” of Israel. For his friendship, his courage and his determination to speak the truth despite all odds and political backlash, we heartily applaud Mr. Harper, not only as an international leader but a man of true conviction.
