New York Rep. Peter King went on the offensive on Thursday,January 2, 2014, skewering the New York Times as a “disgrace” and encouraging Americans to “reject” it for its recent editorial calling for government clemency for Edward Snowden.

“Their editorial today and their whole pattern over the last several years, they’ve really made themselves a blame-America-first rag as far as I’m concerned, and why we exalt The New York Times is beyond me,” the New York Republican said on Fox News, according to Politico. “They go out of their way to be apologists for terrorists and go after those in law enforcement and military who are trying to win this war.”

King reportedly called the editors “a disgrace” and also said he wanted them to care “more about America than they did about the rights of terrorists’ appeasers.” King, who is a vocal proponent of the National Security Agency, also said that NSA programs don’t violate the privacy of Americans and that lives are saved because of them, according to Politico.

“And yet, The New York Times races to Mr. Snowden’s defense. They don’t care about American lives being lost,” King reportedly said. “They have this narrow, liberal, left-wing ideological point of view. They did it to the NYPD; they’re trying to do it to the NSA.”

“It’s time for Americans to stand up and reject The New York Times and expose them for the rag that they are.”

Ironically it took a Twitter feed to call out the hypocrisy of King’s remarks. A Politico update to the original King article stated:

“As several of our Twitter followers have pointed out, King calling the Times “apologists for terrorists” is a little ironic, considering he was once “one of the nation’s most outspoken supporters of the Irish Republican Army and a prolific fundraiser for the Irish Northern Aid Committee (NorAid), allegedly the IRA’s American fundraising arm” as noted by this 2011 Mother Jones piece. King raised money for NorAid, spoke at its events, and “tirelessly championed the anti-British cause.”

Also from Politico: “King has also made similar comments he made about the Times to other organizations who have undertaken investigations into privacy and surveillance issues. In 2012, King told Salon’s Michael Tracey that AP writers Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman “have no moral integrity” for their Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into the NYPD’s anti-terrorism policies. “
