Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani revealed to Oprah Winfrey that when he held the position of mayor the mafia had put an $800,000 price on his head.

He made the revelations to Oprah Winfrey last week as he was interviewed on her OWN cable channel program titled “Oprah: Where Are They Now.” He explained during the program that prior to his stint as “America’s mayor” he was a former prosecutor. As a result, he was frequently targeted by criminals, and especially mobsters, that he had helped to put behind bars during his prosecutorial days.

“I don’t think anybody prosecuted more mafia members than I did,” Giuliani boasted. “Certainly, no one sent them to prison for the lengthy periods of time that I did.”

Giuliani was U.S. Attorney before taking the role of New York City mayor, a position he held from 1994 to 2001. Giuliani is frequently regarded by the media as “America’s mayor” for his leadership role in New York City in the aftermath of 9/11.

On the program, Giuliani, a Republican, purported that the Sicilian mafia put a contract out on his life the very first year that he served as mayor.

“They offered $800,000 to kill me. Then, toward the end of the time I was the mayor, a particular mafia guy who we convicted and put in jail for 100 years put out a contract to kill me for $400,000,” he told Winfrey during the interview which aired last week. “I kind of felt bad that I went down in value. I started at 800, I went down to 400.”

Never shy about voicing a political analogy, Giuliani compared the mafia threat of violence to today’s security threats with religious extremism, which he said concerns him far more than the mafia ever did.

“Now, when we start talking about Islamic extremist terrorism — that worries me more, because they are suicidal.

“Part of why I didn’t worry about the mafia was because there was a certain rationality to their kind of violence. This other kind of violence is completely irrational violence.”
