The Legatum Prosperity Index is an annual ranking, developed by the Legatum Institute, of 142 countries. The ranking is based on a variety of factors including wealth, economic growth, personal well-being, and quality of life.

According to the London-based Legatum Institute, the most up to date “Prosperity Index” includes Israel within the top 50 countries in the world.

The index evaluates 142 countries. Amongst them, Norway ranked number 1, the United States ranked 11th, and Israel ranked 39th.

This ranking system is used to reflect health, wealth, economic growth, personal well-being, and quality of life for each country. The prosperity index is derived from different categories, including surveys filled out by citizens of states in the index.

In several of the categories Israel made the top of the list. In education Israel is ranked as the 25th highest nation. They improved by 8 positions since last year’s index.

Israel ranked 32nd in economy, 33rd in health, 31st in entrepreneurship, 28th in government, and 19th in social capital.

Unfortunately, Israel received a poor rating in security at 113th, and an equally disagreeable rating in personal freedom at 112th. These two lackluster ratings dropped the overall rating of the nation.

Despite the last two poor rankings, Israel scored 3rd highest in the Middle East, just behind the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait. Israel is ahead of Saudi Arabia and Morocco, and the countries of Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Egypt, and Syria are very far behind. Iran’s rank was a ghastly 101st place.

Compared to the world average, 69% of Israelis are happy with their quality of life compared to 58% of the rest of the world. Unemployment is also lower in Israel than the rest of the world by 50%.

However, the number of people employed is lower in Israel than average. In a survey, citizens of Israel responses indicate distrust in the State: 36% trust the government, and 14% are satisfied with its effort in combating poverty.

Also, a measly 42% of Israelis had trust in the financial system, as opposed to 52% in the rest of the world. A smaller percentage had trust in the judicial system.

Less than the majority of Israelis believe it is a good place for minorities. 53% said they’ve donated something to charity in the last month. This is twice the amount than the world’s average. 90% of Israel’s citizens also believe their friends and family can support them in times of trouble.

For the fifth year in a row the Norwegians took the first place rank. Switzerland ranked a close second, Canada in third, Sweden in fourth, and New Zealand taking the fifth place. The United States continues to rank amongst the highest countries of the world.

The head of the Legatum Institute, Jeffrey Gedmin, said that over the past five years, “the world has seen a continuous increase in prosperity, with citizens in many countries experiencing improving wealth,” according to Ynetnews.

As evaluations like this one express, as time goes on Israel consistently ranks higher and higher at the global stage.
