FOX News’ Monica Crowley confirms her commitment to Israel at the Israel Bonds Women’s Conference in NYC
On Wednesday evening October 23, 2013 over 150 women who gathered for the annual Israel Bonds Women’s Division Conference held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan were treated to a most special address delivered by FOX News’ Monica Crowley. The conference, themed Legacy and Leadership, was chaired by Sharon Halpern.

The National Women’s Division (NWD) of Israel Bonds facilitates connection between Jewish women and the modern State of Israel, a nation blending a stirring legacy with a dynamic, forward-looking society. By offering opportunities that both strengthen portfolios and Israel’s economy, the Israel Bonds Women’s Division is uniquely positioned to provide women with the means to achieve financial goals in a significant yet personal way.

NWD activities include stimulating, sophisticated programming as well as networking events in the U.S. and Israel. The NWD sponsors a bi-annual delegation to Israel with diverse itineraries that are inspiring and memorable.

Speaking about the critical importance of leadership in these tenuous political times, Crowley, who is known to be a big supporter of Israel said, “The most effective leaders are comprised of ‘head, heart, and guts.’

Crowley recalled that at the end of her junior year in college she was instructed by a professor to read a handful of books to help her find her way in the world. Amongst those weighty tomes was one authored by former president Richard Nixon and Crowley said, “it had the largest influence on her.”

Drawing tremendous inspiration from the book, Crowley, then 19, spontaneously sat down and wrote Nixon a letter. “It was a substantive letter that dealt with the issues he raised in the book,” Crowley said.

In the letter she writes, “Well, Mr. President, I understand you’re busy, but I would love to come and say hi and pay my respects. If you ever have a free moment.”

She mailed a copy to his publishers Simon and Schuster in New York and also sent the same letter to Nixon’s post office in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. A few weeks later she received a handwritten note from Nixon inviting her to come to his office in northern New Jersey to talk personally with him about foreign policy.

After spending an hour and a half talking foreign policy and domestic politics with Nixon, she departs with a formidable sense of mission that altered her career trajectory.

“A little initiative can go a really long way,” Crowley told the conference attendees. “It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, it doesn’t matter what you’re tackling in your life, a little initiative can go really far and change your life.”

Immediately after graduation Nixon offered Crowley a job as the foreign policies assistant where she worked on his final two books and traveled around the globe with him. She met many heads of state, including Francois Mitterrand in Paris, France and the entire communist leadership in Beijing, China.

Traveling to Moscow, Russia with Nixon in the brutal month of February, she recounts a moment she had with him when the only time they could speak in private was when they went alone outside in the freezing air. Nixon claimed the Russians were listening to their every word and the only place they could speak in private was outside where they knew they weren’t being recorded.

“Experiences like these are some of the most precious in my life. If it wasn’t for that letter, nothing would have happened. This goes back to the whole concept of leadership,” Crowley said.

Concerning her very first trip to Israel, Crowley explained her long standing commitment to the Jewish state: “You have to go to Israel to understand Israel. You have to go there to understand the proximity of the enemies. You have to go there to understand the nature of Jihad, the democracy in the Middle East, the only one,” she fervently declared.

She tells a harrowing story during the same trip to Israel, when she was standing with a group of Israeli soldiers and two Palestinian kids approach them with grenades in their hands. After being warned numerous times, the Palestinian kids pursued the group heedlessly and released the pins from their grenades. Immediately, one soldier grabs Crowley, throws her on the ground, and sits on her. Snipers surrounding the area gun the Palestinian kids down.

“It was an experience that I will never forget; because it gave me an all too real glimpse of what Israelis live with every single day. And how the United States should never back down. There shouldn’t be even one sliver of daylight between the United States and Israel, ever! Ever!” she declared in a voice reverberating with passion.

Subsequent to her address, Crowley mingled with the conference attendees who traveled from across the country and the world be present with their Israel Bonds contemporaries.

On Thursday, the conference continued with a day of jam-packed activities. After breakfast, the conference participants went on a guided tour of Gracie Mansion and then returned to the Waldorf for the very special presentation of awards.

Dr. Miriam Adelson was presented with the Circle of Excellence Award in recognition of the 20th anniversary of the Dr. Miriam and Sheldon G. Adelson Clinic for Drug Abuse Treatment and Research in Tel Aviv, which has treated over 800 addicts.

Dr. Adelson was also recognized for the millions of dollars she and husband Sheldon have contributed to the Taglit Birthright program and for their exceptional magnanimity to a variety of Jewish and Israeli causes.
