Sir Michael Kadoorie Celebrates Peninsula Hotel’s 25th Anniversary

The Peninsula New York, situated on 700 Fifth Avenue, on the corner of 55th street, celebrated its 25th Anniversary in style on Sept. 30. The celebration took place throughout the entire hotel, from the lobby to the rooftop, for over 600 guests, hosted by The Hon. Sir Michael Kadoorie, Chairman of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, the parent company of The Peninsula Hotels.

The hotel was presented with an official Proclamation from the office of Mayor Bloomberg, pronouncing September 30, 2013 “The Peninsula New York Day,” which was presented to Kadoorie by George Firtitta, CEO, NYC & Co. During his welcome remarks, Kadoorie announced that The Peninsula Hotels has partnered with the internationally renowned fashion designer Oscar de la Renta to introduce a collection of new bathroom amenities for The Peninsula Hotels around the world. de la Renta was present at the party to show his support for the partnership. Kadoorie also announced the official opening of The Peninsula New York’s new restaurant, Clement, which was named after the company’s CEO, Clement King Man Kwok.

The Clement restaurant has opened its doors after having been a $4.5 million makeover, and will now feature the talents of the renowned chef Brandon Kida, who has gained experience in the world-renowned reputation working for some of the finest restaurants in Manhattan and around the world. As well as the best of Asian orientated dishes, the Clement will also offer contemporary American cuisine

The Clement takes over from Fives, the Peninsula New York’s previous restaurant, which was open for more than twelve years.

During the course of the Peninsula New York hotel’s anniversary celebrations, guests can take advantage of specially organized extravaganza under the title of the Sterling Peninsula Suite Experience, which takes in a one night stay in the hotel’s 3,000-square-foot two-bedroom Peninsula Suite, unlimited access to a Rolls-Royce limousine, a private helicopter tour of New York City, a Private Spa Retreat for two at the Peninsula’s Spa, rounded off with breakfast for two.

The Sept. 30 party featured a five-tiered cake by Sylvia Weinstock as the centerpiece of the dessert buffet, with a large silver apple perched on top of the cake.

Live entertainment was featured in six different venues throughout the hotel, including the French duo Jul & Co., who were flown in from France to perform their signature mix of multi-instrumental and DJ skills, which created an eclectic vibe on Salon de Ning’s East Terrace. Meanwhile, the West Terrace was transformed into a Moroccan-themed tent, colored in deep plush red drapery with low lying seating for lounging and enjoying the performances of Carte Blanche and Elan Cabaret who dazzled with Prohibition-era sounds and dance performances.

The hotel’s glass-enclosed pool was transformed into “Studio 55” with a dance floor completely covering the pool so that guests could dance the night away to the tunes of DJ Ray Jarell as well as watch various musical performers ignite the dance floor with hits from the 70s to the present. On the lobby level, Honey & Vinyl sang vintage classics from the jazz days of old New Yorkin Gotham Lounge. Alexis Foxe & Lounge Noir performed sultry Euro-style remixes of lounge favorites alongside a stunning oyster and caviar bar in the Clement restaurant.

The Hon. Sir Michael David Kadoorie was born and raised in Hong Kong, into a family of Iraqi Jews who first settled in Shanghai in the late 19th century emigrating originally from Baghdad, before moving to Hong Kong after World War II.

The young Kadoorie received his first education at the Kowloon Junior School in Hong Kong later going on to study at the exclusive Institut Le Rosey in Switzerland.

Kadoorie’s father and uncle expanded the already considerable family businesses based mostly in the Far East, into a diversified international group, under the umbrella of the company flagship CLP Holdings Ltd.

Kadoorie now acts as chairman of CLP Holdings Ltd. in which the Kadoorie family stills hold a 35% stake. Among the company vast and diversified interests, CLP Holdings operates a utility company that provides electricity to 75% of the entire province of Hong Kong as well as equity interests in power plants situated in China, Southeast Asia, Australia and India. The international conglomerate also owns and operates the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, owners and operators of the world-renowned Peninsula Hotel Group.

In his role as trustee of the Kadoorie Charitable Foundation, Sir Michael Kadoorie has received recognition throughout the world for his philanthropic deeds, including being awarded a knighthood in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List of 2005.

Kadoorieis recognized as being among the wealthiest people in Hong Kong, with the family fortune currently estimated to be around $6 billion.

The Peninsula New York is located in a 23-story 1905 landmark building and features 185 spacious and luxurious guest rooms and 54 suites. The hotelhas received the AAA Five Diamond Award for thirteen consecutive years, and in 2007 it was named one of the greatest hotels in the world by Travel + Leisure Magazine.
