Weintraub, who got his start as a promoter (clients included Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra) and manager (John Denver and The Carpenters), is best known for producing “Diner” (1982), “The Karate Kid” (both the 1984 and 2010 versions), and the George Clooney “Oceans 11” reboot-trilogy (2001, 2004, 2007). He was the subject of an Emmy-nominated HBO documentary, “His Way” (2011). His last production, “Behind the Candelabra,” a TV biopic of Liberace that was co-produced by Jerry Weintraub Productions and HBO, received rave reviews and an impressive 15 Emmy nominations earlier this month.
The Hollywood Film Awards are determined by founder and executive director Carlos de Abreu and an advisory committee. Last month, the Hollywood Film Awards and Dick Clark Productions, which also produced the Golden Globe Awards, entered into a partnership that could lead to the ceremony being televised in future years.
De Abreu told The Hollywood Reporter, “It is a great honor to recognize Jerry, a true visionary and Hollywood legend.”
Weintraub, 75, was born to a Jewishfamily in Brooklyn, and raised in the Bronx, the son of Rose and Sam Weintraub. His father was a gem dealer. After several years at MCA, he left and formed his own personal management company. In the 1960s, he also co-founded the vocal group The Doodletown Pipers. Among the acts that Weintraub managed at this time were Joey Bishop, The Four Seasons, and singer Jane Morgan, whom he married in 1965, despite her being thirteen years his senior. It was Weintraub’s second marriage. The couple adopted three children before separating in the 1980s, although they never legally divorced.
Over the past 10 years, Hollywood Film Awards honorees went on to garner a total of 96 Oscar nominations and 34 Oscars.
