On Monday July 15, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg joined MLB Commissioner Bud Selig, New York Mets President Fred Wilpon, former Mets All-Star George, Bank of America Military Affairs Executive Jeff Cathey, Rebuilding Together rep Brad Segal, Director, VA New York Harbor Healthcare System Martina A. Pauda and Anthony Soto, US marine Corp Viet Nam Veteran, and St. Albans resident to announce a new outdoor park space for veterans living at the St. Albans Queens veterans residence.

While Major League Baseball honors veterans throughout the year through initiatives like “Welcome Back Veterans” MLB goes the extra mile to give special recognition to veterans during All-Star week. “Major League Baseball has been at the forefront of making sure that the brave men and women who served our country know how they are admired, respected and appreciated,” said Mets radio broadcaster and today’s program moderator, Josh Lewin.

On behalf of Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig thanked the Mets organization led by Fred Wilpon, Sol Katz and Jeff Wilpon, “for being our standing host for the All-Star Game.” He went on to say, “since 1997 more than 57 million dollars has been donated to national and local charitable organizations. More than $5 million will be donated from the activities that will take place tonight at CitiField. Our goal is to leave a lasting and enduring legacy to the New York Community by supporting unique community projects that make a difference in people’s lives.”

Corporate sponsors included Rebuilding Together and Rebuilding Together NYC organizing the construction and the renovations of the St. Albans veterans facility. Bank of America, which has made significant financial commitment to this project and the Scott Company, who donated substantial product to make the outdoor space so beautiful. The area designated for this project is at the rear of the St. Veterans Community Living Center. It includes park benches in a beautiful garden setting with a gazebo and Bar-B-Q area for festive outdoor meals.

New York Mets Fred Wilpon was credited with helping organize Welcome Back Veterans, along with Major League Baseball and the McCormick Foundation in 2005. Mr. Wilpon said, “We had several goals. One goal was to create an awareness around this country that the 99% would be more aware about the 1% and to know what their needs are when they returned.” In particular he wanted the mental health issues of veterans to come into the forefront so the results of their many war torn experiences were addressed when the veterans returned to civilian life.

Mayor Bloomberg thanked the All Star Game for bringing revenue to New York City with more than 200,000 visitors to the City this week. Referring to the veterans and service men and women the mayor said, “We owe them a tremendous debt.” All the freedoms that we take for granted are not free. They were fought for and constantly paid for with the sweat and blood of our young people.”

Following the speeches a tour of the new outdoor space project took place.

The Jewish Voice tips its hat to congratulate the mayor, Major League Baseball and the New York Mets organization for their humanitarian efforts to help support our country’s veterans.
