Three children at a Jewish summer camp in northwest Indiana were injured on Saturday, June 29, as a result of a lightning strike in an open field, The Indianapolis Star reported.

Local police said one of the children was in critical condition in the incident which occurred at the Goldman Union Camp Institute, a Jewish camp run by the Reform movement.

What the children were doing in the field when the strike hit is not yet known, reported The Indianapolis Star. Reporters were not allowed in the camp, and police said camp officials did not want to discuss the incident publicly.

A woman answering the camp’s main phone line, who gave her name only as Susan, said “we’re not at liberty” to discuss what happened. “We really can’t give out any information at this time,” she said, adding, “Right now safety is just our highest concern. Campers at our camp are doing fine, and we’re going on with our program.”

All three of the victims are from out of state, according to the report: a 9-year-old girl from Missouri, a 9-year-old boy from Kentucky and a 12-year-old boy from Ohio. It was not clear from police reports which child is in critical condition.

Officials were called to the scene around 1:40 p.m. as thunderstorms rolled through the area. By the time they arrived, camp counselors had begun “lifesaving efforts,” according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report.

Police said that the camp has more than 100 children. According to its website, the camp had at least four different programs running as of Saturday.
