On Sunday, June 9, the Council of Orthodox Jewish Organizations (COJO) of the West Side held its annual legislative and communal breakfast at the iconic New York Historical Society. The breakfast was attended by several hundred prominent individuals in the Jewish community as well as many local politicians.

Rabbi Allen Schwartz, president of the COJO for the past 28 years retired.  Incoming president, Rabbi Avrohom Marmorstein, took over the meeting and greeted all the guests in a smooth transition that many organizations would be jealous of.

COJO of the West Side is a conglomerate of many diverse organizations and is very involved in the community.  Moreover, they were recognized for their help in the relief efforts in helping those affected by the disastrous Hurricane Sandy.  More than 300 housing units were provided to victims of Hurricane Sandy as well as food and clothing. Many of the activities were coordinated with the sister COJO of Flatbush. Many local politicians and friends of COJO of the West Side spoke of the tremendous deeds that COJO was able to accomplish during the time of need.

While the breakfast was a time to celebrate the achievements of the COJO and the changing of the leadership, it was also a time to recognize those in the community who continue to play a vital role in its success. Honors were accorded to Chief Phillip Banks, as the new Chief of Department of the NYPD. Gale Brewer was honored for her decade of service to New York, and Rabbi Joseph Karasick was given the Outstanding Community Service Award for his work as the Honarary President of the Orthodox Union of America.
