Jeffrey Soffer, the Miami real estate developer who owns the fabled Fontainebleau Hotel, became engaged to supermodel Elle Macpherson in London over the weekend. Soffer, 43, and Macpherson, 48, dated for two years before breaking up in March of last year. After surviving a terrifying helicopter crash in the Bahamas last November that killed Soffer’s friend Lance Valdez, Soffer and Macpherson got back together.

Soffer is a principal at Turnberry Associates, a real estate company that has developed more than $7 billion in commercial and residential property. In 2005, along with the Plant family, Turnberry purchased the Fontainebleau Hotel. Soffer’s father Donald founded Turnberry more than 50 years ago, and, delving into Florida real estate in 1967, transformed a 785-acre tract of marshland along the Intracoastal Waterway in north Dade County into Aventura, a planned city bordering Miami that now encompasses the Turnberry Isle Resort & Club and Aventura Mall, Turnberry’s 2.8 million-square-foot shopping center.

Jeffrey Soffer joined his father’s firm in 1987, shortly after graduating from high school (he did not earn a college degree). A fixture on the Miami social scene, Soffer is known for racing Ferraris and has a pilot’s license. Madsummer, his 257-foot yacht, features a spa, movie theater, and a helicopter pad. Madsummer is now listed for sale.

Known as “The Body,” the Australian born Macpheson’s modeling career began in 1982 with a television commercial for Tab which established her as a “girl next door” figure in Australia. By 1986, Time magazine had already put her on the cover (with a feature entitled “The Big Elle”). By that time, she had also appeared on the covers of Cosmopolitan, Elle, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. She went on to appear in several films, including Woody Allen’s “Alice,” “Batman & Robin” alongside George Clooney, “The Edge” with Anthony Hopkins, and “The Mirror Has Two Faces” with Barbra Streisand.

This is the first marriage for Soffer and the second for Macpherson, who was married to French fashion photographer Gilles Bensimon from 1986 – 1989. She has two boys, Flynn, 15, and Cy, 10, with ex-boyfriend Arpad Busson.

(Editor’s Note: The Jewish Voice does not endorse intermarriage.)
