The Simon Wiesenthal Center praised hundreds of Internet activists who joined the Center’s protest demanding that the demand that the popular website, MemeMaker.net remove an offensive meme with an image of Hitler captioned, “I LOVE THE SMELL OF BURNING JEWS IN THE MORNING” (A meme is any type of viral Internet creation such as a video, text, or image. The type of meme in this case is image with a humorous caption).

The website’s owners have now apologized, “The disgusting photo has been removed and we are looking into finding a new moderator to prevent messages of hate like this from existing on our website,” a statement from the company said. “This kind of behaviour is not accepted on our site in any way and the IP of the individual responsible has been tracked and blocked,” the statement added.

“The Simon Wiesenthal Center is grateful to the hundreds of Facebook activists who joined with us to demand the removal of the horrific Hitler meme,” said Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Center. “We trust that MemeMaker will take steps to ensure that their product and service are not hijacked by bigots,” he added.

“Our Digital Terrorism and Hate project will continue to monitor and combat the leveraging of the Internet by extremists of all ilks. We encourage activists to send us links to such sites, newsgroups and pages to wiesenthal.com/2012slurs, our Facebook page or through Twitter,” Cooper concluded.
