Kosherfest Joins Kosher Community Effort for Sandy Victims

Published

“As we open our doors to Kosherfest this year, we are also thinking of the many victims of Hurricane Sandy,” said Bill Springer, Group Vice President, Diversified Business Communications and Kosherfest show producer.

“Our thoughts are with those who have been affected by the storm, and to that end we are donating $5,000 to organizations supporting victims of the disaster in New York and New Jersey. In addition, exhibitors plan to donate food from the show to City Harvest and the Met Council at the end of the show, continuing a long standing tradition by our exhibitors.”

Meanwhile, the incredible stories of assistance for the victims continues to pour in. While several kosher purveyors still struggle to resume operations, others, even competitors, have helped in their recovery. Retailers are donating food and extending credit to shoppers. 5,000 hot meals, water and fresh fruit were hand-delivered by more than 100 volunteers through Met Council.

A $30,000 matching fund was set up at Brach’s Supermarket for victims in the Rockaways, offering over $45,000 in support. Manischewitz has donated an estimated $50,000 (a full truckload) in canned foods, sardines, soups, and gefilte fish.

Kosher food sources say that while some deliveries were disrupted by gas and transportation issues, the industry is by and large fully operational.
