UK not OK

First HSBC, now Standard Charter, caught up in money laundering scandals? Both pursuing illicit dealings with Iran?

SBC’s executive director put it most succinctly in a recently leaked message: “You f—ing Americans. Who are you to tell us, the rest of the world, that we’re not going to deal with Iranians?”

Who, indeed? Apparently we’re the only country other than Israel interested in preventing a nuclear holocaust.

But no, that’s okay, British bankers. Making a quick buck is way more important than keeping nukes out of the hands of a country whose leaders openly declare their ambitions of turning another country into radioactive dust. And since those arrogant Americans can do no right, you don’t have to heed their words, or participate in their sanctions.

In a way, though, the Brits are right: economic sanctions will do little, if anything, to prevent Iran from realizing its nuclear goals. But since it’s the only tool at our disposal at the moment, better sanctions than nothing.

That said, we need to be ready to follow up on our divestment with Iran with more direct measures. To that end, I hope that our friends in Israel are getting their act together, because it looks like our country, for all its good intentions, is passing the buck on Iran, even as it stems the flow of bucks to Iran.
