Appalled by the most recent wave of atrocities in Syria, Israeli leaders offered medical aid to Syrian refugees and said the world is not doing enough to stop the killing of civilians there.
“We are all human beings,” Israeli President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Shimon Peres said in a radio interview. “Who can be indifferent to the sight of this horrible massacre, the sight of children in small coffins, and of screaming mothers?” Peres said the international community would sooner or later have to intervene. “I hope that it will be sooner,” he said.
“Israel is ready to receive casualties who are evacuated from Syria to Israel, and alternatively we are ready to send medical assistance through Jordan,” deputy cabinet minister Ayoub Kara told Israel Radio. Kara, a member of the Israeli Druze minority, said some Israeli doctors are on the Syrian-Turkish border treating victims of the Syrian violence. Syria, Israel and Lebanon all have large ethnic Druze populations.
Israel has been following the developments in Syria closely, concerned over the breakdown in law and order, as Syria President Bashar Assad increases the use of military force against Syrians demanding change to his autocratic dictatorship.
“We are constantly in touch with the International Red Cross and are prepared to join any aid mission, adding our assets to U.S. or European efforts,” Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said.
Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz warned the conflict in Syria could escalate to a regional conflict. Syria is backed by the Islamist regime in Iran, which also sponsors the Hezbollah terrorist group in Lebanon that refuses to disarm, and the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza.
“Hezbollah, Iranian Revolutionary Guards and the Alawite leadership (in Damascus) are coordinating oppression against the Syrian people,” said Mofaz. “This collaboration is not theoretical.”
“This slaughter is being carried out not far from Israel’s border,” Mofaz said.
“We cannot get involved, for understandable reasons,” he said, adding that he thinks the West, led by the United States, has an interest in preventing genocide from taking place in Syria.
