Sacha Baron Cohen in character as fictitious Middle Eastern despot Admiral General Aladeen

Sacha Baron Cohen is starring in a new movie The Dictator, playing fictional Middle Eastern despot Admiral General Aladeen, who rules over the country of Wadiya.  The character is said to be based, at least partly, on deceased Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein (or more specifically, a romance novel/allegory written by Hussein), though there appear to be elements parodying a number of violent dictators, both alive and dead. In the film, Cohen’s character loses his power and has to work at a health food store in New York City aside Anna Farris.  In contrast to the outrageousness of his character in this film, as well as his characters Ali G, Borat, and Bruno, Cohen is known as private and shy when off-screen, and only gives interviews as his characters, as he has as Aladeen in promoting The Dictator.
Cohen is bold and loud in the guise of his characters, asking absurd questions of regular people as well as celebrities, once asking Newt Gingrich, as Ali G, “Ain’t the problem that if there is a woman president, they’s gonna spend all their time on shopping, getting facials and new shoes?”  Personally, however, Cohen is the opposite.  During filming of Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, in which Cohen plays the villainous station master, Cohen spoke with producer Graham King about an opportunity to play Freddie Mercury in an upcoming Queen biopic.  Even though Cohen desperately wanted the part, an insider told the New York Post that Cohen was unable to sing when asked by King because he was too shy.
Cohen strives to maintain a life outside the public eye. “I think that essentially I’m a private person, and to reconcile that with being famous is a hard thing,” Cohen said to Rolling Stone. “So I’ve been trying to have my cake and eat it, too — to have my characters be famous yet still live a normal life where I’m not trapped by fame and recognizability.”
Members of the paparazzi have also acknowledged Cohen’s successful ability to keep his private life private.  “Sacha Baron Cohen is not only notorious for being one of the hardest celebrities to find and shoot in Hollywood, he’s also extremely notorious for being as obstructive and rude as he can to avoid having his photo taken,” Owen Beiny, director of paparazzi operations at World Entertainment News Network told the New York Post. “He’s on my Top 10 list of ‘don’t bother with’ celebrities. It’s not worth the hassle.”
