An example of a Guinness World Record. Volunteers from UJA-Federation of New York now hold the record for the most sandwiches made for the needy in one hour. What could be better than breaking records while doing charity?

Volunteers from the UJA-Federation of New York got to experience exactly that this Sunday, when one hundred of them gathered at Temple Beth Sholom in Roslyn Heights to prepare sandwiches for distribution among the needy. Little seemed out of the ordinary among the altruists, albeit for the presence of one individual—a representative of the Guinness World Records, the reference book renowned for its collection of worldwide records of some of the wackiest feats.

Long Islanders successfully put together 1,660 sandwiches in one hour, eclipsing the previously held world record of 1,500. The gathering and charity work were part of the Federation’s “Mitzvah Day”; sandwiches were later donated to the Queens Jewish Community Council to feed the needy.
To qualify as a sandwich, the slices of bread were coupled with two foods: soy butter and jelly. Soy butter was selected to ensure the sandwiches would be edible for all, including those with allergies and other health-related issues.

According to a JTA report, another hundred volunteers took place in the distribution of the sandwiches. Card and decorations were also written and attached to the food packages.

Aside from engaging in the sandwich preparations, attendees at the temple were given opportunities to visit the elderly, give blood, create blankets for shelter children, rebuild homes as part of the local Habitat for Humanity, and send provisions to troops overseas and the New Orleans Woman’s Shelter. Advocacy opportunities were also brought forward for youth and adults.
