Former Presidents George H.W. Bush (left) and Bill Clinton (second from right, standing next to former President George W. Bush), along with President Obama (second from left), share a notable dislike for former President Jimmy Carter (extreme right).)A new book claims that two former American presidents, Democrat Bill Clinton and Republican George H. W. Bush, as well as President Barack Obama,  have transcended their political differences to agree on one thing – they don’t like ex-President Jimmy Carter.

“The Presidents Club: Inside the World’s Most Exclusive Fraternity” reveals that Clinton, Bush and Obama share negative feelings towards Carter because – in the years following his late 1970’s presidency – he has taken the lead in foreign policy matters without authorization from the White House. Former aides to Carter have even referred to his actions as “treason.”

“Carter gives the club a great gift, something for all the others to complain about,” authors Nancy Gibbs (of Time magazine) and Michael Duffy write in the book. “When nothing seemed to unite the members, the club often bonded over what an annoying cuss Carter could be.”

The ex-president, who served only one term and is widely regarded as one of the worst United States presidents ever (not to mention the most anti-Israel), has often become involved in international peace negotiations and is known for his work in various countries.

While all the living presidents agree that it benefits the U.S. to have a popular representative of the country make himself available to participate in negotiations with foreign leaders, Carter’s tendency to make serious pronouncements on his own accord has at times created difficulties for the sitting president. One such case occurred when President Obama recruited Carter to fly to North Korea and negotiate for the release of the American Aijalon Mahli Gomes who had been taken prisoner. ‘When President Obama sent Carter to North Korea in 2010, he was so concerned about Carter going off that script that he made him sign a 12-point contract before he left,” said Duffy in a television interview, “including one point which was to never talk to the press about the trip, which then he did talk to (the press) about.’
