Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.Another act of anti-Semitic vandalism took place in Brooklyn recently, as the sidewalk near the Avenue Z Jewish Center was vandalized with anti-Semitic inscriptions such as “Jew” and the Star of David, and signed by “RUS,” a perpetrator who similarly appended his or her initials to markings on the synagogue windows in previous years.

The latest incident comes following a slew of anti-Semitic incidents that have struck the Brooklyn Jewish communities in recent months. Torched cars were found with Swastikas recently, and Mezuzah thefts were similarly conducted at the Trump Village apartments in Brighton Beach late January. Victim to an attack in May 2011 in which thieves stole $200 from a donation box and defaced Torah scrolls and other religious objects, running reparative costs in the thousands, the latest incident at the Avenue Z Jewish center has struck a painful chord for frequenters and leaders of the synagogue and elicited similarly sober reactions from local politicians.

“I am outraged by the news that the Avenue Z Jewish Center in Brooklyn has once again been defaced by anti-Semitic vandals, with graffiti on the entrance door to the center, as well as a sidewalk and nearby synagogue windows,” said Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer in the wake of the incident. “There is no place in our community for this kind of vulgar and cowardly attack—and memories are still fresh of the February, 2011 vandalism at the center which looted a donation box and destroyed a large menorah and a Torah.”

“I urge anyone with knowledge of this incident to contact the NYPD immediately, and I have no doubt that through their great work these perpetrators will be caught,” he added.

Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz also condemned the vandalism in the strongest terms.

“There is one sick individual out there and the police have to stop him,” he said, according to the Brooklyn Daily.
