Former IMF Chief Faces New Criminal Charges

Former International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strauss-Kahn is under fire again, this time after being hit with a new round of criminal charges, accusing him of involvement in a prostitution ring.

Strauss-Kahn, once a presidential candidate, was released on a bail amounting to the equivalent of $135,000.  After being questioned for hours by the police, Strauss-Kahn was arrested under preliminary charges, which means, under French law, that police have sufficient reason to believe a crime was committed but need more time to investigate.  Strauss-Kahn was accused of being involved in parties in which French houses of ill repute imported Belgian women for illicit purposes.

While using prostitutes is not in and of itself illegal under French law, prosecutors believe these women were paid for with misused company funds.  “He firmly declares that he is not guilty of these acts, and never had the least inkling that the women he met could have been prostitutes,” said Strauss-Kahn attorney Richard Malka.  Strauss-Kahn was expected to be a strong presidential candidate in this year’s elections before his arrest in New York in 2011 on charges of assaulting a hotel maid,  Nafissatou Diallo.  Strauss-Kahn could go to jail for 20 years if convicted.
