As the founder and head of Torah Ore, which he led for more than fifty years, Rav Scheinberg taught thousands of students, many of whom went on to become prominent rabbis and Jewish educators themselves. The revered sage authored numerous sefarim, including the monumental Tabaas Hachoshen, and was widely renowned for his authoritative halachic decisions. Rav Scheinberg was also known for his unique appearance, as he wore his tefillin throughout the day and looked larger than his actual frame due to his insistence on wearing as many as 150 pairs of tzitzit at a time. Despite his advanced age, the Rosh Yeshiva regularly traveled to the United States to raise funds for his yeshiva, even at age 100.
After moving from his native Poland to New York City as a child, Rav Scheinberg studied in Rabbi Jacob Joseph School and the Connecticut- based Beis Medrash LeRabbonim, where no secular subjects were taught. A recognized scholar who mastered the entire Talmud at age 16, the young man went on to learn at Yeshiva University’s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary under the tutelage of such rabbinical legends as Rav Moshe Soloveitchik and Rav Shimon Shkop. Following his marriage at 19, Rav Scheinberg and his wife spent five years in Europe, where he studied at the Mirrer and Kaminetz Yeshivas. Rav Scheinberg then returned to the United States, where he served as mashgiach of Yeshiva Chofetz Chaim for 25 years, before opening Torah Ore in Bensonhurst in 1960. The Rosh Yeshiva decided to make aliyah and move his yeshiva to Israel in 1965.
Rav Scheinberg’s wife of nearly 80 years, the former Bessie Herman, died in 2009. At press time, his funeral was scheduled to take place at Torah Ore on Wednesday morning.
