Keith Perry, an evangelical minister and the father of pop star Katy Perry, was condemned this Monday for anti-Semitic remarks he made in a sermon at the Church on the Rise in Westlake, Ohio. The theme of his rant apparently centered on the astounding wealth of Jews.
“You know how to make the Jew jealous? Have some money, honey,” Perry purportedly told congregants. “You go to LA and they own all the Rolex and diamond places. Walk down a part of LA where we live and it is so rich it smells….You ever smell rich? They are all Jews, hallelujah. Amen.” According to Forbes’ “The World’s Most Powerful Celebrities” list, Perry’s daughter Katy earned upwards of $44 million in 2010-2011. Perhaps she also carries a rich scent?
The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a Jewish advocacy organization headquartered in Los Angeles, lambasted Perry as the Western reincarnation of World War II- era anti-Semites. “If you take out ‘LA’ from his rant, most people would guess that Hitler or Goebbels was speaking,” explained Rabbi Marvin Heir, the organization’s founder and current dean. “It’s hard to believe that something good that could emanate from the mouth of a preacher who is filled with such bigotry and hatred.”
